Dear Class,
For your new blog response, finish your new TIB reading and then answer the following question:
Consider all the TIB essays you've read so far. Choose one common theme and write a paragraph or two on *your* thoughts on that topic. (Remember that you'll be writing a TIB-style essay as your last paper assignment this semester.)
For your homework summary, summarize the Overload article. Bring your summary to class (don't post it here).
Reminders:
1) Be prepared, as usual, for a quiz (and be prepared for questions on run-ons, fragments, commas, and pronoun case).
2) Keep thinking about the pros and cons of technology. Also pay close attention to the strategies that the writers use in your homework readings. Doing both these things will help you prepare for your in-class essay (which is Thu, 10/22).

I think family is what gives us strength to live life. Without a family a life can be empty. I think family is the most precious gift we were given. Even if the family we have doesn't think of us in that way we should be thankful we have it. My family is the best support system i have. If i ever have a problem they listen and help me solve it. My family brings me joy and laughter. We are a mixture of culture and languages. My family is my life and without them it would be hard to survive.
ReplyDeleteafter reading through many essays in "this i believe" i feel like one of the common themes is that you can overcome many hardships by sticking to your personal beliefs and philosophies. i think this is very important to remember in hard times. if you fail to stick to what you believe in you'll find yourself lost and consumed by life's problems.
ReplyDeletei dont mean to sound morbid but i enjoy reading the essays about the loss of a loved one. i like reading the different ways each author deals with their loss. i have lost alot of friends so i can relate to each author that writes about this topic.
ReplyDeletemy favorite essay along these lines was "Paying Attention to the Silver Lining" by Annaliese Jakimides. i was right where she was after my friends were killed and i was carrying them around like a "bag of rocks" just how she said. it took me a long time to realise the best way to deal with it is to celebrate their life by telling stories about them and remembering all the good times we had together
I particularly liked the essay "The Universe Is Conspiring to Help Us" because in my life ive experienced this. My junoir year in high school it was a late football practice and i had no ride home. So i asked my noe friend Kenison for a ride home and he said yes. Well it turns out his family is probably the most generous people ive ever met. What i thought would be a one time thing turned into an everyday thing. I see how his mother and Aunt are so generous and let us over to the house all the time. If me or any friends ever need help we can go to them. I just liked this essay because this guys tells us of generous people in the world and in my life i can be a witness to what he is saying
ReplyDeleteThe most common theme i found in TIB involved family. For example the "Telling the Kids the Whole Truth" by Martha Leathe. This essay is about telling kids everything, not keeping anything from them, keeping the family safe by keeping them informed instead of hiding the truth.
ReplyDeleteOne of the common themes I found in reading This I Believe was the ability to learn through someone's death. In several of the essays, the author's talk about how a death in the family caused them to see the world in a different light or how they learned to overcome a certain obstacle. I enjoyed reading these essays, and learning how each individual coped with their situation. It was really neat to see the outcome of it, and to read about the new perspectives they gained on life.
ReplyDeleteOne of the essays I thought was really inspiring was "Paying Attention to the Silver Lining," by Annaliese Jakimides. Jakimides talks about her son's suicide and how she lives life celebrating him. She talks about her son's philosophy of talking to everyone, and how she now does the same thing. She states that her son's death really made her sit up and pay attention. Jakimides' essay really inspired me to try and do the same.
One of the common themes i found in "This I Believe" was family. I think that family is important because they help you get through the hard times as well as celebrate the good times. You need your family to know that your not alone in the world and they will be there for you.
ReplyDeleteA common theme in a lot of the this i believe essays is hard experiences that these people had to overcome. I think that people writing about these things help them get over them, and its a great therapy to get your feelings out. I know when i am upset i like to blog, because it helps get everything i want to say and everything i think out. Its very relieving to know someone somewhere may write it.
ReplyDeleteI love reading the stories in TIB that have to do people's experience in life ,and how sometimes a tragedy has to occur for us to open our eyes. It sort of makes me feel comfort when i read a story that i can say ,wow Ive been there and felt that same way. It gives me the creeps when i read a story that i can relate to because sometimes when I am going through some really rough times, i think that no one can be doing worse than myself, but when i read these stories I realize that other people have it worse and they end up overcoming what ever they have gone through. So somehow reading these type of stories has given me the courage to just rub off any problem or tough situation and just keep on going with my life, what doesn't kill you, makes you stonger!
ReplyDeleteReading TIB, I have noticed many different ideas, and philosophies, from all of these essays. I have also realized that a great deal of these writing deal with change from either someone not there, leaving, or passing away and the outcomes. Personally, reading this book has really helped me deal with the situation of having someone very close to me pass away, and how to handle and understand everything. TIB has taught me that its okay to grieve and be down at times that are appropriate, because everybody goes through happenings like mine.
ReplyDeleteReading TIB has helped me realize that its okay to be open about things your ashamed about or might feel judged upon. Its taught me that expressing your feelings and dealing with it only makes you become stronger and it helps you break through the toughest ones. I believe everyone should follow what they believe and what makes them happy.I believe that people should always fight for what the want and never give up till their happiness is found.
ReplyDeleteI think out of all the essays I read before from the book “This I Believe”, one thing that I thought that had in common is family. Where family are the people in your lives that get you through the tough times in life and where you know that they are right by your side. Without a family, it can be hard going through life without someone one there for you, is telling you that everything is going to be okay. So you should be very lucky that you have one, and with having one you can create great memories, and discovering more throughout your life. Where in the end, you always know that your family has your back, and want good intensions happening for you later as you grow up.
ReplyDeleteThe most common theme in This I Believe was having strength and over coming hardship. In majority of the essays, most of them, talk about about their family and how important love ones are. They explain when life gets really rough, their families are always the one to be by their sides and helps them out. Some however don't have their families, and where they accomplish it all on there own. That's where strength comes in to play. With out having strength you are not able to get on with life. I think that all the essays in the book are really personal and that's why i think a lot of us can understand where the writer is coming from.
ReplyDeleteI think the most common theme in this i believe is overcoming bad situations in your life. I think that the book shows us that its okay to go through bad situations but you just have to have the strength to overcome it. Many people have different beliefs on overcoming them, by having their famalies there or just overcoming it themselves. It takes a really strong person to overcome anything bad their lives. This i believe made me realize that everyones different and views/deals with life differenty.
ReplyDeleteThe most common theme between all the essays share so far is that they all seem very sad and slightly up lifting. Meaning that you have a lot of topics writers are writing about whats going on in their lifes. They all do a really good job of getting their feelings down on paper, and its so hard to not feel sorry for them, but it sometimes makes you think about how lucky you are to not be going through what some of essays share with us, and it does make you think. It also makes them very vulnerable because they put themselves out there for everyone to see so I'm sure they get a lot critizing from all end of the spectrum which it turn makes me have a lot of respect for them even if I don't like their writings, because I could never do that.
