  1. If I could choose one essay that speaks to me the most it would have to be "Being Content with Myself". That essay basically is telling people to not judge by what they see. Just because a person is a certain ethnicity it doesn't mean all the stereotypes apply. A person should not be judged by how they look.
We all get judged, though, and i guess we have to learn to deal with it. As the essay says as long as we're happy with ourselves it doesn't matter what others think because others being happy with us shouldn't be as important as being happy with ourselves.

  2. the essay that jumps out at me the most was kim phuc's "the long road to forgivness". first off i'm familiar with the icon image and found what she had to go trough after the photo was taken very interesting. secondly i think her essay has a good messege, forgiveness frees you from hatred.
i think that in today's world many of us should keep this philosophy in mind, and practice it to help make the world a better place.

  3. "The Chance to Move Forward" essay speaks to me the most. Maria Robbins talks about the things in her life that changed it was the better and for the worse, and the chances she got to do so many things. It's very inspiring to read something like this. It lets me know that even when horrible things happen you will get something good out of it, if you try. I also know that from experience.

  4. The one essay that got to me was "I Am Not My Body" by Lisa Sandin. I think This Is true if you keep a positive attitude you can do anything even if your missing part of your body. I think that the defects you have can always help you learn new things.I teaches you all sorts of different values and that's important to achieve new goals. I thought this essay spoke to me because i think that if you put your mind to doing something you will achieve it, and it doesn't matter if your missing a hand or part of your body you will succeed in the end.

  5. The story that speaks to me the most is the one of "Being Content with Myself." The reason why this sotry speaks to me the most is because I feel that I can honestly relate to this one. You see, I am Mexican, this as well as the african american culture is one that is full of streotypes. Growing up wasnt always easy, people would say stuff like, oh you're mexican, im sure you eat beans for breakfast, lunch and dinner or I was expected to listen to a certain type of music just like Kamaal. I honetly believe that in order for others to be content with us, we first have to be content with ourselves because how could you expect someone to accept you when you dont accept yourself?

  6. The essay that really caught my attention was "Admittance to a Better Life," by Michael Oatman. I've noticed that pursuing one's own personal education does transform a person. The way you think and look at different things and situations is entirely changed through education. Not only does education change the way you think but it more often than not brings with it a better life style. It may not bring millions of dollars but it increases chances of economic stability. Now hearing these few positive circumstances education can produce, the endless other not listed; most would think everyone would want one but the mind boggling truth is that most people don’t pursue one.

  8. "The Long Road to Fogiveness" stuck out the most for me because it was written by a woman who was pictured in a famous photo from the Vietnam War. It shows how at times war can we such a horrible thing for civilians and people not involved. Her whole village was bombed and burnt to the ground. She was burnt along with her little brothers and cousins. Kim Phuc was very angry and had alot of hatred because of what happened. After she read the Holy Bible and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, she felt change. Kim was able to forgive the situation and move on with her life.

  9. The essay "Living what you do everyday" by yolanda O'Bannon stood out to me the most. I believe that everyone should do what they love doing and not what people expect them to be doing. Coming from a Middle Eastern family every parent expects you to become a Doctor, an Engineer, Lawyer or anything that pays good money. The parents are always compeiting with other parents to show off whos child is smarter. I know so many of my friends who are forced to study and become something their parents want so they look good in front of people. I believe that everyone should do what they love to do because your the one thats going to be dealing with it for the rest of your life not them. So you choose what you want to do and do what makes you happy.

  10. The essay " The Chance to Move Forward" by Maria Mayo Robbins really stood out to me. I love her philosophy of life. She basically says that chance is what makes a life a life. Chance can bring you anywhere and everywhere, even the places you would least expect. I most definitely agree with her. She was explaining how she believes the person in front of her in line could be her very good friend one day and that guy from the coffee shop can possibly give her the most romantic memorable experience of her life. That's exactly how i feel! Chance could do all these things. With chance you never know what's going to happen next, and that excites me, makes me happy. :]

  11. The essay "Be Cool" by Christian McBride speaks to me the most. I found the beginning portion of the essay to be quite amusing. I do always see people in Starbucks with a laptop.. completely zoned out in their work not even knowing whats going on around them. The thing that really caught my interest in this essay though was the ending. I definitely agree with the writers thoughts about pleasing people. It is not always about being able to help someone out in what may seem to be a "positive way" but rather helping them out in the way that may be in the best interest.

  12. I liked the story " I am not my body" by Lisa Sandin. ive always knew that true beauty wasnt on the outside, but it's actually in the inside. She talks about how she has to undergo alot of challenges in her life because of some disabilities that she has and that sheslearned new things and lessons because of it. I feel as though even if you have problems you have to make the best of it and use it to your advantage.

She also says how she isnt just this disabled person and that shes funny, filled with love, and intelligent. I dont think you should judge people on their looks because theres more to a person than that. I really hate people that are like that its a sad thing to do. You dont know how strong a person really is until you get to know them.

  13. "The Practice of Slowing Down," by Phil Powers really spoke to me. His essay was really inspiring. Powers talks about living in a frenetic household, and how he grew up living life in the fast lane. He talks about how it is still inside of him, but he has learned to slow down. He now takes the time to appreciate and acknowledge things in his life.

I think it is so important to stop daily and look around us. We go so fast that we miss the beauty of life. It seems like now even more our society is in a constant rush. Powers' essay was definitely a wake up call to stop and enjoy life no matter the situation.

  14. If I were to choose one essay that speaks to me the most it would be "Being Content with Myself" by Kamaal Majeed. In this essay it mentions how people may make judgments about other's appearance. Just because you come from a certain culture doesn't mean that you are different from the others. That's why they are called stereotype for a reason.

I have to admit I may have done some stereotyping, but never to a point that I have segregate the person just because of their culture. We all have either been stereotyped or we have done the stereotyping, but alas everyone has to deal with it and just move on with life and being true to yourself and not change just because someone doesn’t like the way you may be.

  15. The one essay that got to me the most was "Being Content with Myself" by Kamaal Majeed. The reason Kamaal Majeed's essay spoke to me the most, is because i too were in a similar situation while i was in the military. While I was on my first deployment i remember my Division Officer asking me what type of car i drove. It shocked him to know i did not own a "Lowrider" once I let him know I owned a lifted truck. There were other things he mentioned that made me feel like i didnt feel myself, but like the author I didn't comform to society's stereotypes.
