I can relate to "Good Grammar Gets the Girl". When I send an email I don't check my grammar because usually it's just a quick message I need to send. When I was reading the essay I agreed with it 100%. Using bad grammar does make you look a bit uneducated and it can affect what people think of you. I have to admit though that I have been guilty of sometimes using lets just say less than perfect grammar without even noticing. Good grammar has been forgoten by most people mainly because texting has taken over the world and people need to quickly say what they want even if it means using numbers as letters or mispelling.
ReplyDeleteMy goal was to not procrastinate. I have to say that I have been doing very well. As soon as class is over I head to the library to do the homework that was assigned. Doing the reading has allowed me to come across new words which are making my vocabulary greater which is what I wanted to achieve. My last goal was to pass this class and if I keep on doing my homework on time i'm pretty sure I will pass.
the essay made a lot of sense. i definitely use spelling and grammar as a first impression, but lately I've been trying not to get too hung up on things like that. i read online that people who misspell words aren't any less intelligent that people that are good at spelling. whenever i write something whether it's for a class essay, text message or email i try to use good grammar and spelling just for practice.

Using bad grammer can affect all of your writing. I try real hard to check my papers for errors in punctuality. When it comes to school assigments I take a closer look at my spelling to make sure it is the best that I can make it. If I am writing an E-mail to a rather attractive female who I hope there is a slight possibility of making out with in the near future, then I will double check my spelling and punctuality the best I can. If I am writing a real quick e-mail or a text message to a friend, then I tend to not really check my spelling errors because I use a little bit different lingo when talking to friends.

I found the essay to be really funny becuase I can relate to it very well. I didn't agree with it quite fully though. Poor grammer in emails and texts are understandable;but in essays and writing assignments it might be a little unattractive.I'm not one to judge someone based on their grammer used online because I do the same. Since I'm a big texter, I constantly abbreviate alot of words. It's so bad that I've caught myself using slang in my class essays. It has become a really bad habit. Not everyone can express them selves through writing, doesn't mean that person isn't smart. I found it really funny that the guy in the essay got dumbed because of his poor grammer. hehe

I was actually really entertained by the essay,it reminds me of my cousin . i used to write her letters and she would write back and send me my letter with red marker allover it circling what was misspelled or used inappropriate. I don't fully agree with the part that people that misspell are uneducated .

I am one of those person who only uses spell check if its important or if for school . i know its a bad habit but honestly its the only time i write.

When i read the title of the essay i didnt really understand what the writer was trying to say until i read the whole thing. I dont think bad grammar is a plus, but it's not something thats going to push me away to not like someone because i have bad grammar too. but when its reallllllyyyyyy bad then its a major turnoff. I thought it was funny how she was giving few examples on how to better your grammar. I also think that good grammar doesnt always get the girl :)
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of proud of myself because one of my goals was to do all of my homework and I have been doing that! Another one of my goals was to not procrastinate but sadly i have. I always do my homework the night before instead of doing it the day assigned. I have to try and think of ways to make me do all of my work on time.
The reading did not make sense to me in till i finished all of the reading. I agree with the writer. Using bad grammar can be confusing to the other person reciving the message. When i write a quick text i never check my grammar or spelling. It can be embarrassing when someone else catches your mistakes.
ReplyDeleteOne of my goals was to be confident in my future writing which i have not got to that level yet. I think with more practice it shouldnt be a problem. My other goal was to turn in all homework assignments. Which i have not done but i will work on it through out the semester.
For me there are two types of grammar too use. I believe people should use correct grammar for work, school, or anything else professional. But other than that . . . grammar shouldnt really matter. I do not think people are unintelligent if they use bad grammar. But it does depend on what I am reading.
ReplyDeleteSo far I am keeping up with my goals. 1. Pass class 2. write better essays. 3. stay awake in class. Those may not be the hardest goals but it is what I struggle with the most. I am trying to get enough sleep at night but I still can only fall asleep around 1. For what ever reason I can not fall asleep at a good time.
This was really interesting to me. I have to most definitely agree with what Elissa Englund said about how it is very unattractive for any guy to use bad grammar online. I have to say that it does make a boy look "dumb" when he misuses certain words, and spells common words wrong. It was really funny how she uses Zach Morris and Screech Powers for guys to have an example. This article looks like something I would read in "Cosmopolitan" or another girly magazine. I think every guy should read this artical, maybe it could get them that girl!
ReplyDeleteMy number one goal was to be on time to class and to not procrastinate. To be completely honest, Im still procrastinating. Its really hard to fix a problem I have had for so long. I guess I just have to keep on trying harder. On the other hand, I'm happy to say that I have been on time to every class we have had so far!

I really enjoyed reading "Good Grammar Gets the Girl". The article was so right about the use of bad grammar. Although I'm not at bad as Craig, I can definitely relate to using bad grammar. I think in our generation we shorten a lot of words while texting and emailing friends. I know I do it constantly. I've noticed that when it comes to writing a formal email I sometimes have trouble and have to reread it several times. Since I am constantly shortening words and leaving out punctuation I have to reread my text or email several times to make sure I haven't missed anything. I really enjoyed reading Englund's five stellar grammar tips. I know I will definitely use them in the future.
ReplyDeleteThere is definitely room for improvement in my goals. I am still having a little trouble with procrastinating. I get distracted so easily sometimes it's hard staying focused. I am turning in all my homework assignments so that's helping me achieve my 1st goal which is to pass the this class.

I do however attempt to check my spelling and grammar whenever emailing a significant other. I have never gone on a dating site but have experienced some horrible emails and texts. They too made me loose interest in that person.
ReplyDeleteMy goals where to get an A in the class and improve my writing skills, I don't think I'm receiving an A in the class right now, but hope to change that. As far as improving my writing skills, only time can tell, the semester is not over yet and i don't expect to get better over night.
i both agree and disagree with "Good Grammer the Girl." I always find it really annoying when people write the wrong words because it makes reading it confusing. For example using "weather" and "whether." On the other hand, using abbreviations like "ppl", "g2g", or "lol" doesn't bother me. I think if a girl didn't like someone because of that they are too shallow, because using abbreviation is just easier sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI am confident that I will be able to reach the goal I have on "goals and choices." Its only been a couple weeks of school and I've already learn great techniques for writing better. I need to work more on concentrating on reading and not letting television or friends distract me.
I found the "Good Grammer Gets the Girl" essay educational. Other than the fact that I learned two new words from the words to learn, I was also able to finally understand the difference between contraction and possessive. The writer makes a very good point, not only is it important to be able to read but write correctly as well. I sometimes find myself making my text messages shorter by the way I spell some of the words. This is something I need to work on so that I don't continue these bad habits with my school work.

Man woman are getting really picky now a days. Well maybe for some, but the point that she was trying to get across did make sense. In this day and age males and females should be able to have correct grammar especially when the new thing now is to date online. So, when a man or woman sign up for online dating and the only way that you can get a read on someone is just by reading their email that they sent you has bad grammar gives you a big indication on how they can communicate to you verbally.

My first reaction to this article was amusement. When I was reading this I was laughing half the time. Although this story was funny half the time it really did made me think about the way I type. When I send a text message or an email I never really check it before I send it. It’s after I send it that I realize that I made a mistake in my message. Even though there is spelling check and T9 to make sure that one has a correct message it still doesn’t help when the words are in the wrong place.

I would have to agree with what the article has to say. I know that my friends and I do that a lot when we are texting each other and we say that it’s because were writing to each other. That we don’t have to spell it out or things like that because we know what it is that the other person is trying to say. We do the same thing when it comes to writing emails and instant messaging we don’t spell things out just like we would if were texting each other. I think that a lot of people are doing it that way today because it’s an easy way of writing a message to there friends. In the article she refers to Tupac Shakur’s Poetry she talks about he would cut down the words to simplify it. That is what I see a lot of people doing in texting emailing and instant messaging. At the same time I know that me and my friends would never write a email to a teacher or my work like that I would you correct grammar and spelling. There is just a time and place for it.

For the "Good Grammar Gets the Girl" the title throws you off a bit. But when you start to read it, it makes total sense. With the author i would have to agree that first impression are based on how you express yourself. It is kinda sad how she has to go with online dating however if i were in her position i would not want to try and have a conversation with someone who can not even right a single sentence. How annoying can that be.
ReplyDeleteFor my goals, obstacles and choices i would say i'm doing fairly well. It isn't too far in the semester where i have mastered my writing but i have been doing all the prompts so i think i can say it is going pretty good.
I can completely relate to what she is saying and i aggree with what she says. Someone can be a very intelligent person when you talk to them, but if you read what they write they seem like a totally different person. It makes me wonder what employers think when they read their resumes.
